About Try a Fly

Love to fish but don’t have the time to tie your own flies? I have the fly for you.

Hi my name is Dave, I have been a fly tyer for over 25 years. On December 9, 2008, a day I will never forget, my wife found me on the bathroom floor after work. I had suffered a stroke that morning getting ready to go to work. I thought I would never tie a fly again, but my passion for the hobby/sport lived on. I kept tying for therapy with tutors from Grindstone Angling. I started giving my flies to friends. The feedback was heartening - pictures of bass, pike and bonefish caught on my flies!!!

I started selling my flies at a local marina and then to renowned fly fishing guide John Valk of Grindstone Outfitters. It keeps me busy through the winter. My sister suggested setting up a web site to expand my horizons.

I tend focus on basic flies that work! You know the ones - Woolly Buggers of all colours, and my favourite Clouser Minnows - And of course Crazy Charlies for bonefish. I try to honour the great fly tyers by following their recipes as closely as I can.

I would be pleased to tie a fly for you. Drop me a line.
I would be willing to take custom orders like Northern Magic for pike or the assortment of trout and salmon flies in the colours you want. If I can't tie something I will let you know. All I can say is try a fly!!

Dave has been tying flies for me for the past 3 years. Dave had approached me a few years ago and informed me he had a stroke which affected movement in his left arm. I suggested that we do a physio program, tying flies to increase the dexterity and co-ordination in his left arm and hand. Now, a few years later, I am fortunate to have Dave as one of my premier fly-tiers for my customers, Guide Patterns and even my own use. He does a wonderful job and although he continues to improve the levels of quality and the variety of patterns he is covering the scale of, his Streamers, Steelhead patterns and Saltwater flies are all great. Thankyou again Dave. We will continue moving forward with more orders as the requirements for flies grows. You will not be dis-satisfied with Dave’s Flies.
